New research from SciFin, a new company that helps revenue teams turn fragmented information into timely action, and Censuswide reveals that critical customer and deal risk is still catching revenue teams by surprise, even as investment in revenue technology rises. The Cost of the Revenue Context Gap, a survey of 500 U.S. Sales and Revenue Operations leaders, found that 78% have been surprised by a deal falling through that their systems indicated was fine, even as 65% said their organization increased annual spending on revenue systems this year. Nearly three in four (74.6%) have also lost a customer they didn’t realize was at risk, and 71% say that by the time their organization identifies risk, it is usually too late to change the outcome.

SciFin calls this disconnect the Context Gap: the distance between systems of record and the complete context that leaders need to understand what is happening, why it is happening, and what to do next.

In the 2025 Gartner® Transform Prospects Into Buyers With Revenue Enablement Analytics report, Gartner states, “Siloed revenue processing hurts enterprise outcomes by causing missed opportunities and poor revenue prediction.” 1

“I’ve seen this problem firsthand as the CEO of my last company,” said Mohit Aron, CEO of SciFin. “There is nothing more critical to company success than growing and retaining customers. Revenue leaders need context they can depend on to guide the organization and deliver shareholder value.”

The findings reveal two recurring patterns behind the Context Gap for revenue teams: Reality Divergence, where the information recorded in systems increasingly fails to reflect what is actually happening; and Context Fragmentation, where the truth is scattered across tools, interactions, and people.

Reality Divergence: The Record Doesn’t Match Reality

Revenue teams have systems of record, but leaders routinely discover that those records are incomplete or outdated at the moments they matter most.

  • 81% of leaders say most CRM updates reflect what someone had time to type rather than reality.

  • Nearly three-quarters (74.6%) have lost a customer they did not realize was at risk until it was too late to save them.

  • 35% of forecasted deals slip into a later quarter, on average, underscoring the sales optimism versus deal reality.

The implication is that leaders are increasingly managing the business through incomplete or outdated information, creating blind spots that surface only after customers or deals are already lost.

Where Confidence Runs Out

Even when leaders have a forecast, confidence in the underlying picture remains fragile.

  • 75% couldn’t honestly tell their CEO or board they’re “very confident” in this quarter’s number.

  • 61% gave the board a number more conservative than what they actually believed.

“SciFin gives me one trusted view of our pipeline. I can see what changed, where risk is building, and where to put resources, without dragging reps through another round of deal inspection.”

Context Fragmentation: The Truth is Scattered

The information leaders need often exists – it just doesn’t live in one place.

77.2% of leaders say they regularly must go outside their forecasting tools to understand what is actually happening. More than a quarter (27.2%) say that when a deal was lost, the warning signs existed somewhere in the organization, but nobody connected the dots in time. Customer reality is increasingly spread across CRM records, calls, emails, support interactions, point solutions, and individual employees. Revenue teams are left manually piecing those signals together to understand the whole picture.

The Cost: People Become the Integration Layer

That fragmentation creates a measurable productivity burden.

Revenue leaders report spending an average of 6.11 hours every week in meetings dedicated to finding status – equivalent to roughly 3.3 working days each month. At the average organization surveyed, about 8 employees spend half of their time manually reconciling data across systems.

“Every tool we added meant more fragmentation and a bigger bill, not better decisions. With SciFin, our team and our AI work from one current context layer. We spend less on software and trust the answers more.”

The Human Problem Isn’t Dishonesty

The findings also challenge a common assumption about inaccurate or overly optimistic forecasts: that salespeople are deliberately hiding bad news.

Just 7.2% of leaders blame dishonesty when reps sugarcoat their forecasts. By comparison, 25.2% say reps are naturally optimistic, while 21.6% say flagging risk earlier has historically failed to change the outcome.

In other words, the Context Gap is less of a people problem than a systems problem. When trustworthy customer context is fragmented, go-to-market teams are forced to rely on judgement, manual reconciliation and incomplete signals, making revenue management more art than science.

“We want to give the world something simple, something that just works,” said Aron. “Context Convergence is easy, efficient, and secure access to all the context that matters, always kept true to reality. That means revenue teams no longer chase information. They act on it with confidence, while they still have time to change the outcome.”

Closing the Context Gap for Revenue

SciFin built Context Convergence to address this problem by bringing structured and unstructured customer signals together into an accurate, continuously updated understanding of the business, using a three-layered architecture that addresses the problems identified in the research:

  • Context Cloud converts raw signals, structured and unstructured, into a converged and accurate understanding of the business, with roll-ups pre-processed to save time and token cost.

  • Intelligence Layer consumes that context to produce clarity, answers, and suggested actions, with agents handling reporting, call prep, and other time-consuming work. The same context and intelligence powers every SciFin application, from pipeline and forecasting to coaching and rep performance.

  • Interaction Layer meets the user on every surface they already work in, giving revenue teams real-time access to full context without switching tools. SciFin’s AI Companion and these applications are accessed through MCP and REST APIs, including from SciFin’s own web and app experiences.

Rather than just adding another dashboard or point solution, SciFin brings together revenue context spread across people and systems and keeps it current. Your revenue teams see risk sooner, act decisively, and win more and bigger deals faster, with fewer tools to manage.
